About Wasatch Aquaponics

I am an aquaponics enthusiast in Syracuse, Utah, who wants to share knowledge about what works and what doesn't work in the wasatch front. I discovered aquaponics when I lived in a small house on 0.07 acres, with almost no space to garden. I searched for "gardening without very much dirt" and discovered aquaponics: a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics, where the waste of fish is fed to bacteria, which conver it into plant food, all in the same water cycle.

There's a wealth of content online about how to start with aquaponics, how to troubleshoot common issues, and what is and isn't possible. See external resources for some of my favorites. But nearly all of that directed at people who:

• Do not have cold winters
• Can use tropical fish like tilapia or barramundi that are illegal to raise in parts of the Wasatch Front, and also can't stand our high and low temperatures
• Have abundant soft water that's already near the ideal pH
• Don't struggle so much with pests like squash bugs, cabbage aphids, and earwigs

None of this applies to most if not all of the Wasatch Front, and I learned that the hard way after multiple low-growth years and some dead fish. So I started this project to help local growers navigate these challenges.

This is not my full-time job right now, just something I enjoy and would like to grow with my community. So consults are typically limited to evenings and weekends.
